![]() Not first time, likely not second or third either.Ĭertification is when the platform holder runs a title through their own testing to ensure it meets a certain standard. Congratulations! So, I hope you’re ready to survive certification. So you develop your game and it runs on, say, the PS5. Let’s assume that somehow, despite having no games to your name you actually get hold of both the legal agreements required to let you develop and publish on these consoles and also any prerequisite hardware/software you’d need. But let’s assume that somehow you get over this hurdle. These development environments are not free. One of the big issues that Unity and Unreal both share is this idea that they can just build to console and it’ll be fine… all they are saying, in reality, is that IF you have access to the development environments then yes they can work with them. You’d need access to the developer environments and ecosystems for these consoles. So you may ask yourself why this is a problem… well you see, that leads onto the second point. I raise this because if this is the case, none of the big three will return your calls. Edit: Apparently a lot of the below is also a bit outdated, though I maintain it’s not an easy ride in the slightest.įirstly, I don’t know your experience but judging by your posts I’m assuming you don’t actually have much real world experience in game dev - or dev at all, actually. Let’s assume before we start out that you do not have a publisher. But not as to why what you’re asking is not actually feasible. I’ve seen a lot of responses as to why you should release on pc. Although the caveat here is that marketing a mobile game costs WAY more than on a PC or consoles so it's not economically feasible for most smaller studios. Mobile is also a potentially good market since smartphones are everywhere, even in the poorest regions of the world nowadays. So if you are trying to reach as wide audience of people with little to no disposable income then try making something with VERY low requirements rather than make a Nintendo Switch or Xbox game. You can afford an older beaten down laptop (and you want one cuz it may help with your job prospects) and maybe a used PS3 (which is only useful for gaming and that puts it very low on any priority list). Why? Because when a single AAA game costs 1/4th of your monthly wage then you really cannot afford a PS5. Especially in less developed countries (which I assume is your primary target if you are looking at more economical means) you will find PCs WAY more often than any consoles. It's true that consoles are more cost efficient when it comes to AAA gaming (a PC equivalent to a PS5 costs like 50% more) but this applies to a section of the market you are NOT aiming for. Both to develop for (no third party agreements required) and to play on (I think everyone expects to see at least a laptop at home). The primary reason you see games on PC and NOT on consoles is because PC is more accessible, not less.
